The Twelve Animals of the Chinese Zodiac

There are twelve animals in the Chinese Zodiac. In order, they are as follows: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. These twelve animal signs are “archetypes” of personality, each with a combination of positive and negative attributes. Often times, these positive and negative attributes are opposite ends of the spectrum. For example, the Pig’s kindness taken too far becomes naiveté. Similarly, the Tiger’s courage becomes rashness, and the Dragon’s confidence becomes narcissism. As such, these “archetypes” cover both positive and negative characteristics and traits.

But even the most casual observer of human personality and behavior knows that no two individuals can ever be exactly alike in character and temperament. In the Chinese Zodiac, there are Five Elements that govern each animal sign. Each of the elements influences the animal signs differently, giving them certain unique characteristics. Combining the five elements with the twelve animal signs, there are now sixty patterns of personality under the Chinese Zodiac. Below are the Twelve Animal Signs and their personalities, as influenced by the Five Elements.
