Toyota Models Drop Out Of Top 10 In China

Toyota’s recall of its vehicles raised doubt from customers and caused decline of sales in China. According to the latest figures released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, two top selling Toyota models dropped out of the top 10 bestselling cars in China.

With deep affection from Chinese customers, Toyota’s sedans, especially the Corolla and Camry, were among the bestselling cars in China. In 2009, the sales of these two models ranked #9 and #10, with total sales of 1.57 million and 15.62 million, respectively.

Domestic car sale figures, released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, showed 16.5 thousand Corollas were sold in December 2009, placing it #10 on the bestselling list; however, the Toyota Corolla didn’t show up on the list in January. Affected by the recall, sales of Toyota’s joint venture partner: First Automotive Works (FAW) – Toyota declined from 45.3 thousand to 44.7 thousand from December to January.

“In January, overall domestic car sales reached a new peak in the history again. With growth of 12.9% in the car industry as a whole, the lower sales of the FAW Toyota had showed lack of confidence in the quality of Toyota.” Zhao Lin, an automobile researcher in Bohai Securities said. Although Toyota didn’t recall the Corolla and Camry in China, like it did in the US and Europe, the news itself obviously has caused damage to its image.

The only good news for Toyota is sales of its RAV4 surged to 7800 units in January, which represents a 13% year-on-year (YoY) growth. However, as Toyota just announced a RAV4 recall in January, this growth is unlikely to sustain into February.
